The Ned Smith Center
Ned Smith was a self-trained
artist, writer and naturalist who created thousands of drawings and paintings of wildlife
during his distinguished career. These paintings and drawings were published in numerous
books, magazines and other publications. "Gone for the Day" was the monthly
column he wrote for the Pennsylvania Game News Magazine from January, 1966 through
December, 1969. A collection of these columns was published in book form in 1971.
His illustrated columns appeared in Sports Afield and Ned Smith was a person who spent most of his time outside and was able to write and draw about what he saw with a style that was beautiful in its simplicity yet elegant in its content. His writings and drawings touched a responsive chord in all who love the outdoors.
Sadly, he died in 1985 at the young age of 65.
Throughout the year, the Ned Smith Center offers a monthly program designed to expand your understanding of our natural world, wildlife art or the cultural life of Pennsylvania's Appalachian region. In addition, the Center participates in the national saw-whet owl banding program, conducts a variety of waterfowl and bird surveys, and offers an extensive trail system on Berry Mountain.
